ALABAMA– New Work Search Requirements

  • Governor Kay Ivey signed a bill that now requires claimants to make “systematic and sustained efforts to find work, including contacting at least three prospective employers for each week of unemployment claimed.” Previously, claimants were only required to make one work search contact per week.  Additionally, the new law also stipulates  random reviews of the work search efforts must be completed on at least 5 percent of the claims.

MICHIGAN – $140 Million Boost to the Unemployment Compensation Fund

  • Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill this week that will add a total of $139.8 million to the unemployment program. Most of these funds will be deposited into the Unemployment Compensation Fund which will help lower future tax costs for businesses. This bill also will be used to make customer service improvements at the UI agency as well as fund the hiring of additional employees to fight UI fraud.
