Hawaii: Disaster Relief

Hawaii continues to rebuild from destruction caused by last year’s floods, Hurricane Lane, and the eruption of Kilauea. The Department of Labor released $4 million in Disaster Unemployment Insurance benefits, helping those who lost their job as a result of the disasters and are not eligible for regular unemployment benefits. This amount was part of the $429 million that had already been allocated.

Some good news coming out of the US Senate last week reveals more federal funding is likely headed their way. This additional aid tacks on $80 million more, bringing the grand total to $509 million of federal disaster aid. The additional funds will be mostly focused on replacing the Hawaii Volcanoes Observatory, with a bit of it also assisting the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge.
