The Families First Coronavirus Response Act went into effect on April 1, 2020. Employers can review the act at the following webpage: https://www.congress.gov/116/plaws/publ127/PLAW-116publ127.pdf. With this act, some employers will need to provide their associates with paid sick leave and expanded medical leave for COVID-19 related reasons.
The new federal requirements apply to covered employers, including employers with less than 500 employees and almost all public employers. The act reimburses these employers for expenses incurred through a payroll tax credit so that they can provide paid leave. Employers with fewer than 50 employees may seek an exemption and must seek the exemption at the federal level. Associates of covered public and private employers may be eligible for up to 2 weeks of emergency paid sick leave (80 hours) at full pay and, in some cases, up to an additional 10 weeks of emergency paid family medical leave at partial pay.
The Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division will be enacting and enforcing the act.
